Dual-function breakers combine AFCI and GFCI protection in one breaker. Guardian reviews whether that device suits your panel and circuit, installs compatible equipment and investigates existing problems before treating a protection change as a complete repair.

AFCI protection addresses certain arcing conditions; GFCI protection addresses certain current leakage. A dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker includes both functions. ABB’s residential breaker guide outlines the separate protection types.
A “combination AFCI” label is not the same as “dual function.” Combination refers to series and parallel arc-fault protection. Leviton explains this labeling distinction. If you are unsure which device is present, describe the label without opening the panel.
A remodel, circuit alteration or written inspection finding may prompt a review of the existing protection. Bring the actual project requirements, rather than assuming every circuit needs the same change. Guardian checks the proposed work and equipment before defining the installation.
Compare the separate AFCI breaker and GFCI breaker pages if you are trying to identify the requested work. A GFCI receptacle at an outlet is also different from a breaker installed at the panel.
The device must suit the panel, circuit arrangement and connected equipment. The breaker’s amp rating and physical size are only part of that review. Guardian checks the applicable manufacturer information and identifies any corrections needed before proposing replacement.
If an existing dual-function breaker trips, describe the affected loads, timing and recent changes. Do not repeatedly reset it or substitute a standard breaker to bypass protection. A replacement is not evidence that every downstream connection or appliance is in good condition.
Useful information includes the property address, safely visible panel identification, written findings and the planned equipment. For a kitchen or bathroom remodel, share the contractor’s schedule and the proposed circuit changes.
The estimate reflects the device, investigation, circuit corrections and access required. Confirm power-interruption arrangements and who can authorize additional work. New circuits, panel work and appliance repair are not silently included in a breaker-only quote.

No. Combination AFCI describes series and parallel arc-fault protection. Dual-function AFCI/GFCI identifies both arc-fault and ground-fault protection.
No. Protection functions do not increase the circuit or service capacity. Any additional electrical load needs its own assessment.
No universal compatibility is implied. The panel, specified breaker family and circuit requirements must be checked for the actual installation.
GFCI addresses certain current leakage associated with shock risk; AFCI addresses certain hazardous arcing conditions. Device location and the required protection arrangement depend on the work and applicable requirements. Do not substitute one protection type for another just because both have a test button.
