Main disconnect, main breaker or equipment disconnect?
A disconnect provides a means of separating the circuit it serves from its supply. A service disconnect is part of the building’s service arrangement. An equipment disconnect serves a particular appliance or system, such as an outdoor heat pump; it should not be assumed to shut down the entire property.
A main circuit breaker includes overcurrent protection as well as a disconnecting function. A disconnect switch is not automatically a circuit breaker. The label, approved application and system arrangement establish its role; enclosure size or handle style alone cannot tell you what it controls.
A CLEAR PLAN FROM THE FIRST CONVERSATION
What the work involves
Assess demand and equipment
Review existing loads, service ratings and the condition of the panel or service equipment.
Plan the supply and interruption
Define equipment ratings, feeder routes and any utility-controlled disconnection before scheduling.
Confirm scope, permits and scheduling
We identify permit and inspection requirements for the property jurisdiction. Utility coordination is included when the work affects its equipment or supply. You receive the proposed scope before approving the work.
Complete the work and check operation
We complete the agreed electrical work, test the relevant installation and explain operation, findings and any follow-up. Required official inspections are a separate part of completion.

Meter-main equipment and emergency-disconnect labels
A meter-main combines metering provisions and a main disconnect arrangement in one assembly. Other properties have separate enclosures. Replacing equipment near the meter can involve utility and service-entrance coordination, rather than the same scope as replacing an appliance disconnect.
Emergency-disconnect wording is installation-specific. Depending on the arrangement, the label may identify service equipment or explicitly state that it is not service equipment. Guardian reviews the applicable requirements and equipment instructions for the address. Adding a sticker does not change the device’s suitability or the wiring arrangement. See Eaton’s explanation of emergency-disconnect arrangements.
Fused and non-fused equipment are different
A fusible disconnect incorporates fuses that provide specified overcurrent protection. A non-fused switch provides a disconnecting means, with required circuit protection provided elsewhere in the system. Breaker-based arrangements are another option where suitable. These are design choices, not interchangeable replacements selected by appearance.
Voltage, current, connected load, enclosure suitability and documented equipment requirements all affect selection. The rating on the enclosure does not by itself establish the fuse or circuit size your appliance needs. Manufacturer reference: Eaton safety-switch fundamentals.

Air conditioners, heat pumps and pool equipment
An AC or heat-pump replacement may change the required electrical connection even if the new unit looks similar. Guardian coordinates the supply, disconnect and final connection with the HVAC installer. HVAC electrical work is separate from refrigerant and mechanical commissioning.
For pool equipment, disconnecting means, GFCI protection and bonding serve different purposes. One does not replace the others. Outdoor exposure, access and the equipment layout guide the installation. Product example: Eaton air-conditioning disconnect options.
What homeowners can notice from a safe distance
Report a broken cover, detached enclosure, visible corrosion, damaged conduit, scorching or a recent loss of equipment power. Salt air, irrigation and storm exposure are useful details in coastal properties. These observations help plan assessment; they do not establish the internal condition or prove the disconnect is the cause.
Keep covers closed. Do not approach wet, hot, sparking or damaged equipment. An OFF position does not prove the whole enclosure is dead: incoming connections can remain energized, and solar, batteries or generators may introduce other sources. Professional isolation and verification are essential. For smoke or fire, move to safety and call 911.

What the visit and estimate should cover
Send the address, equipment model, reason for the work and a safely taken exterior photo if available. Include inspection findings and any planned replacement equipment. Guardian identifies the affected circuit, suitable device, associated damage and required checks before defining the repair.
Equipment availability, supply interruption, access, wiring condition and any utility or inspection coordination affect scope. We clarify which equipment will be unavailable and explain the completed work. Project quotes are free; diagnostic/service-call charges are explained before booking. We serve all of Horry County and Georgetown County.

Service area, permits and scheduling
Inside city limits, the City of Myrtle Beach Construction Services Department handles electrical trade permits and inspections. In unincorporated Horry County, the relevant authority is Horry County Code Enforcement. The property jurisdiction and proposed scope determine the requirements; a Myrtle Beach mailing address alone does not establish the responsible department.
Santee Cooper serves Myrtle Beach customers. Utility coordination is needed only when the proposed work affects the utility supply or requires its involvement. Confirm the provider on your bill; service territories vary across the wider area.
Whether the property is in Carolina Forest, around The Market Common or along Kings Highway, share access and occupancy requirements early. Guardian serves all of Horry County and all of Georgetown County. We identify who is responsible for permits, power interruptions, other-trade work and completion checks in the proposed scope.
Project quotes are free; diagnostic and service-call charges are explained before booking. Guardian provides 24/7 electrical service; call to confirm current availability and scheduling. We offer a two-year installation warranty on everything we install; ask how it applies to the proposed work. View our license and credentials.
Questions about electrical disconnect installation & repair
Can I get more electrical capacity just by putting in a bigger panel?
A larger panel does not by itself increase the capacity of the incoming electrical service. The utility supply, meter equipment, conductors and protective devices must support the proposed arrangement. Main service lugs, the terminals where incoming power connects, may remain live with the main breaker off; keep covers closed.
Will the power need to be turned off while this electrical work is done?
The required power interruption depends on the equipment and scope. We identify affected circuits, safe isolation arrangements and any utility-controlled disconnection before scheduling. Tell us about medical equipment, refrigeration and occupied business operations.
Can a larger breaker stop this circuit from tripping safely?
A larger breaker is not a safe substitute for finding the cause of repeated trips. The wire rating, equipment requirements and connected demand must be evaluated. Increasing protection beyond what the circuit supports can allow wiring to overheat.
Does replacing electrical equipment mean all my old wiring meets today’s code?
Replacing one component does not certify every existing circuit or concealed wire. We identify the work covered by the proposal and assess the requirements triggered by that work. Findings elsewhere are explained separately rather than presented as a whole-property certification.
