Switches, dimmers & smart controls

A failed switch is a repair request. Adding dimming, controlling a light from two locations or choosing smart controls is a planning conversation. Guardian helps match the device to the wiring and the lights or equipment it will operate.

Tell us about your project

Begin with how you use the room

Tell us which lights should operate together and where you want to control them. A hallway with switches at both ends, kitchen lighting in separate zones and a bedroom fan with a light have different control needs. Mark the existing locations on a room photo and describe the change you want in everyday terms.

Compatibility matters more than appearance

A dimmable lamp or fixture still needs a compatible dimmer. Send the bulb or fixture model along with the proposed control. For smart switches, include the product and any app or hub you intend to use. We review the device instructions and existing wiring rather than assuming every smart control fits every switch location.

Repair the cause of unreliable operation

Describe a switch that only works in one position, flickering that began after a lamp change, or a control that no longer operates the fixture. These symptoms can involve the device, connected lighting or wiring. Electrical testing and compatibility review guide the repair. Unusual heat, burning odor or abnormal noise should be assessed rather than worked around with another switch.

What the estimate needs to include

Replacing a compatible device in place differs from moving the control or adding a second location. New wiring, box space, finished walls, the number of controlled loads and equipment setup affect scope. For commercial or managed properties, confirm who chooses the devices and approves access. We can discuss setup and a functional walkthrough without promising that unrelated home-network or third-party account issues are included.

Guardian serves homes and businesses in Myrtle Beach, Carolina Forest, all of Horry County and all of Georgetown County. We travel to your property; share the address and scope so we can discuss the next step. See our service areas.

Questions about switches and dimmers

Can an ordinary switch be changed to a dimmer?

Often it is a useful option to assess. The connected lights, their dimming capability, existing wiring and selected dimmer determine a suitable installation.

Can you repair a three-way switch problem?

Yes. Tell us which switch locations operate the same light and how the behavior changed. We diagnose the arrangement rather than assuming one visible switch is the only fault.

Will any smart switch work without wiring changes?

No universal answer applies. Requirements vary by product and existing installation. Share the exact model before purchase so any necessary wiring or equipment changes can be discussed.

Choose how the room should respond

A single-pole switch controls from one location. Three-way arrangements provide control from two locations; four-way switches can be part of a system controlled from three or more locations. Tell us which locations should operate the same light. Timer switches can be useful for exhaust fans, while occupancy or vacancy sensors change how lights respond to a room being used. Smart controls introduce their own load, wiring and connectivity requirements. We review the actual fixture or fan and the existing arrangement before choosing compatible equipment. A dimmer intended for lights is not automatically an appropriate fan-speed control.
