Mini-Split & HVAC Electrical Circuits

Guardian coordinates electrical circuits, disconnects and connections for HVAC equipment, mini-splits and electric heating with your equipment installer.

What the Work Involves

Match the circuit to the equipment

Review the model number, electrical rating and existing supply before choosing wiring or protection.

Plan the connection and cable route

Confirm the mounting or outlet location, access, disconnects and any work through finished areas.

Confirm scope, permits and scheduling

We identify permit and inspection requirements for the property jurisdiction. Utility coordination is included when the work affects its equipment or supply. You receive the proposed scope before approving the work.

Complete the work and check operation

We complete the agreed electrical work, test the relevant installation and explain operation, findings and any follow-up. Required official inspections are a separate part of completion.

The equipment label matters more than its cooling size

A mini-split’s room coverage or BTU rating describes its heating and cooling capability, not its complete electrical requirements. The selected indoor and outdoor equipment specify the voltage, phase and circuit requirements. Some system labels identify minimum circuit ampacity (the current a wire can carry under its installation conditions, which helps determine suitable protection) and maximum overcurrent protection; those values serve different purposes in circuit design.

Guardian uses the actual equipment documents with the HVAC installer’s schedule. We assess the conductors, circuit protection, disconnect and connection required for that system. Heat pumps with added electric backup heat can have different supply needs from the outdoor compressor alone. A replacement with similar cooling capacity is not automatically compatible with the old wiring.

Outdoor units and indoor equipment

Tell us where the equipment will be installed and how the electrical route reaches it. An outdoor unit may involve exterior exposure and a disconnect location; indoor equipment may need access through an attic, mechanical room or finished space. We define which connections belong in Guardian’s scope and which controls or interconnections are handled by the HVAC installer.

Electric heating and garage projects

Electric heaters, baseboard heat and shop heating equipment also need a supply suited to the selected model. Include other planned garage loads, such as tools or EV charging, in the discussion. We review the combined demand and distribution before committing to another circuit. A subpanel may help organize circuits but does not itself increase the utility service capacity.

Replacement equipment and existing wiring

A replacement system can change the electrical requirements even when it serves the same rooms. We assess whether the existing circuit, disconnect and connection are appropriate, and quote corrections if needed. Tell us about previous tripping, damaged exterior components or an installer’s electrical repair list. Repeated trips should be investigated rather than addressed by increasing breaker size.

Common questions before booking

Why can’t you quote the circuit from the system’s tonnage?

Tonnage describes cooling capacity. Different systems with the same tonnage can specify different electrical supplies and protection, especially when electric heat or multiple units are included.

Does a tripping HVAC breaker always belong to the electrician?

The cause can be in the supply, protective device or mechanical equipment. Share the HVAC technician’s findings and the timing of the trip so the building electrical and equipment diagnostic scopes can be coordinated.

Do you install the complete mini-split system?

This page covers electrical circuits and connections. Mechanical installation, refrigerant and HVAC commissioning must be arranged with the appropriate contractor.

Can you add power for a garage heater?

Yes. Send the heater model, location and other planned garage equipment so we can review the electrical scope.

Can the existing air-conditioner breaker stay?

That depends on the new equipment requirements and the existing installation. We assess compatibility before deciding what can remain.

How are the quote and diagnostic charges handled?

Guardian offers free quotes for planned projects. A fault-finding visit or service call can involve a diagnostic charge, explained before booking. Access, equipment requirements and the work identified determine the proposed repair or installation scope.
