What the Work Involves

Review the building and system scope

Confirm the alarm or emergency-lighting equipment, occupancy needs and applicable project requirements. Identify existing-system compatibility before adding devices.

Plan power and interconnection

Define device locations, wiring, backup-power arrangements and interconnection requirements. Coordinate required approvals for the proposed system.

Confirm scope, permits and scheduling

We identify permit and inspection requirements for the property jurisdiction. Utility coordination is included when the work affects its equipment or supply. You receive the proposed scope before approving the work.

Complete the work and check operation

We complete the agreed electrical work, test the relevant installation and explain operation, findings and any follow-up. Required official inspections are a separate part of completion.

Age, chirping and planned replacement

Smoke alarms wear out. USFA advises replacing them 10 years from manufacture; follow the specific product instructions, including any earlier end-of-life indication. Carbon monoxide and combination devices have their own replacement instructions. A newer battery does not renew an aging sensor.

An intermittent chirp can have several product-specific meanings, including a battery or end-of-life signal. Tell us the model and pattern if known; do not disable an alarm as a permanent solution. For a sounding smoke or CO alarm, follow emergency guidance, get outside and call 911 from a safe place rather than waiting for a service appointment.

Residential heat alarms have a different purpose

A heat alarm responds to specified heat conditions; it does not detect smoke or carbon monoxide. It can be part of a suitable alarm plan in locations allowed by the product instructions and applicable requirements, but it is not a general replacement for required smoke alarms. Guardian reviews the proposed location, power and documented interconnection compatibility before installation. Share the floor plan and existing alarm models so the whole arrangement can be considered. See First Alert’s heat-alarm instructions for the limitations of that specific product.

Smoke detection and carbon monoxide detection are different

A smoke alarm detects signs of fire. A carbon monoxide alarm detects CO, a gas that can be produced by fuel-burning equipment. A combination unit includes both functions; an ordinary smoke-only alarm does not detect carbon monoxide. Device selection starts with what protection is needed and what the existing equipment provides.

For homes, the U.S. Fire Administration recommends smoke alarms in sleeping rooms, outside sleeping areas and on every level. Placement still needs to follow the chosen product’s instructions and the applicable requirements for the property. Share a floor plan, renovation scope or inspection findings so coverage can be reviewed.

Hardwired, battery-powered and interconnected alarms

Hardwired alarms receive building power and may include a backup battery. Other products use batteries as their primary supply. Interconnection lets compatible alarms signal together when one activates. It may use wiring or an approved wireless arrangement, depending on the product; matching the connector alone does not establish compatibility.

Guardian reviews the models and wiring before replacing one device or a group. A commercial panel-based system has different design and testing requirements from household alarms. See commercial fire alarm work for tenant spaces and system projects.

What the replacement visit includes

Guardian reviews the agreed device locations, power and compatibility, completes the selected wiring or replacement work, and checks operation and interconnection as appropriate for that equipment. We explain the testing and maintenance information supplied with the devices. Mention accessibility needs, including hearing-related alerting, when the project is planned.

Device quantity, ceiling height, new wiring, compatible replacements and access to occupied units affect the estimate. For rental property, identify who can approve work and arrange tenant access. Project quotes are free; diagnostic/service-call charges are explained before booking. Coordinate additions with remodel electrical work before walls and ceilings are finished.

Details that help us plan your project

  • Alarm type or model, if known
  • Property use and devices to replace or add
  • Ceiling height and access arrangements

Common questions before booking

Can one old alarm be replaced with a different brand?

Only when the replacement arrangement is documented as compatible and suitable. Interconnected alarms should not be mixed based only on appearance or plug shape. Send the existing models before buying replacements.

Will hardwired alarms still work during an outage?

That depends on the model and its backup-power condition. We review the selected alarms and explain their intended backup arrangement; building power alone does not establish outage protection.

Can you review the alarms when we renovate or buy a home?

Yes. Share the layout, existing equipment and inspection notes. New sleeping areas or altered layouts are good reasons to review locations and compatibility as part of the agreed electrical work.

Can I replace the failed device with any model that looks the same?

Replacement equipment must be suitable for the system and intended use. Compatibility can depend on power, signaling and manufacturer requirements. Share the existing model and system information before buying a replacement.

How are the quote and diagnostic charges handled?

Guardian offers free quotes for planned projects. A fault-finding visit or service call can involve a diagnostic charge, explained before booking. Access, equipment requirements and the work identified determine the proposed repair or installation scope.
